Key West has had more than it's fare share of good times and adversity. It has been known by as many names as some of it's colorful underworld inhabitants. Strangely enough, it was at one time the largest city in Florida. At one point it was one of the richest cities in the country when the wrecking industry (a proper name for piracy) was at it's peak. Later it found itself as one of the poorest, mainly as the wrecking business was brought to an end.
The small island was sold in 1822 to John Simonton for $2000. The city of Key West was incorporated in 1828. Through the early 1900's is was a veritable boom town. During this time a major Cuban migration began. The cigar industry was started and Key West was for a time, the largest Havana cigar producer in the USA.
Over the years Key West began catering to tourist and found itself as a springboard to many writers and singers careers. Tourism, along with the fishing and dive industry employee many of the locals. And with Key West being 5 miles wide, most locals walk or bike instead of using autos. Aside from driving, visitors can choose from walking, biking, scooter rental, a conch train or trolley to see the island of Key West.
