Bahia Honda State Park
(305) 872-3897
This state park contains three camping areas and can accommodate tents
to big rigs. It also offers cabins, marinas, picnic areas, boat and
kayaks rentals. Bahia Honda is home to one of the most beautiful
natural beaches in the Keys. The water beneath the old bridge attracts
tarpon and other large gamefish. The Flagler Bridge off the southern
peninsula (with the train trestle) is now a historic site. Fee to visit
and/or camp. Reservations to camp are needed most times 6 months in
advance.
Bat Tower
M.M. 17
Around the 1920's, Richter Perky attempted to establish a fishing camp on Sugarloaf Key. The mosquitoes in the area were so ferocious that he decided to build a bat tower in 1929. However, the bats abandon their post instead of dining on the mosquitoes. The bat twoer still stands today, as a reminder of challenges faced by early settlers.
